Elizabeth Penelope Grove 21 Apr 1812 - 26 Jul 1879

Elizabeth was the first child of John and Penelope's and was born 9 months and 10 days after the marriage. Evidence confidence: Confident - Birth day and month given in Journal

We are not sure when she joined her sisters to teach in Halifax, Nova Scotia and later at the Grove home in Beaverbank, Nova Scotia.

An Elizabeth Grove was listed as living in Kings County - Brooklyn 8th Ward in 1850 - making her the leading suspect as the author of the journal.

Gravestone at St. John the Evangelist in Sackville, Nova Scotia:

Elizabeth Penelope Grove died July 26th, 1879

Like all her sisters, she didn't marry.

In 1873, some of Elizabeth's students raised some money to be used toward the construction of a church in Beaverbank. Unfortunately, it wouldn't be drawn from the account for that purpose until several years after her death. Her brother James was the executor of her will and was required to apply for a letter of administration to draw the funds out in 1883:

The sum of Money in the Savings Bank, which it is necessary to obtain Letters of administration to withdraw was collected by a few of Miss Grove's pupils to aid in the construction of a little church at Beaver Bank - It was deposited in the Savings Bank the same year, 1873 by Elizabeth Grove in trust for the church, and it was supposed that it could be withdrawn or transferred to Rev. Wm Ellis to be applied to the purpose for which it was originally raised. but it was found the clerk who entered it in the books had not inserted the words in trust and therefore it became necessary to take out letters of administration. As it is only for this purpose that they are needed. Mr. B.G. Gray, who has been consulted on the subject thinks the usual advertisements in the papers will not be needed, and the expense will be less.~
